What we collect

Nothing, on our end. Better Nights has no account system, no analytics, no crash reporting, and no advertising. The developer never receives or stores your data. When you use voice logging, your spoken transcript passes through a small relay server we operate solely to reach Anthropic's API — that server does not store, log, or retain the transcript; it exists only so the app itself never has to hold API credentials.

Where your data lives

Everything you log — bathroom visits, sleep quality, weight, nutrition entries, your personal habits ("Experiments"), and your settings — is stored locally on your device using Apple's on-device storage, and synced to your own private iCloud account (via Apple's CloudKit) so it survives a reinstall or a move to a new device. This iCloud copy lives under your own Apple ID, protected by Apple's standard iCloud privacy safeguards. The developer has no access to it.

Permissions the app requests

Microphone & Speech Recognition — only requested if you use voice logging, to record and transcribe what you say. Nothing is recorded unless you actively hold the "Hold & Speak" button. The app remains fully usable without ever granting this permission, via manual entry.

iCloud / Network access — used to sync your data to your own private iCloud account, and to reach the voice-logging relay server described below. No other network access is requested.

Voice logging (optional)

If you use voice logging, the app records audio on your device and transcribes it locally using Apple's on-device Speech framework — that transcript never leaves your device in audio form.

To estimate nutrition (protein, calories, water volume) from what you said, the transcript text is sent to a small relay server we operate, which forwards it to Anthropic's Claude API (anthropic.com) and returns the result. The relay server does not store or log the transcript itself. Only the transcript text is sent — not your name, device identifier, location, or any other data from the app.

The relay server does keep one small piece of state per device: a daily count of how many voice logs that device has made, used only to enforce a fair-use limit. This count is just a number — it contains no transcript content, and cannot be traced back to you personally beyond the device itself.

Anthropic's handling of API requests is governed by their own privacy policy: anthropic.com/legal/privacy

Weekly AI Insights (optional, subscribers only)

If you generate a weekly insights report, a compact summary of that week's logged data — bathroom visits, sleep quality, your own sleep notes, time in bed, nutrition/water/calorie totals, experiment results, and weight — is sent to the same relay server described above, which forwards it to Anthropic's Claude API and returns a written report. The relay server does not store or log this data itself; it exists only to keep the Anthropic API key off your device, same as voice logging.

This happens automatically for active subscribers — once a completed week's data is ready (the Sunday after it ends), the app generates that week's report the next time you open it, in the background. There's no manual "generate" button; you'll simply see the new report appear. The generated report is saved on your device (and synced to your own private iCloud account, like everything else you log) so you can review past weeks.

Subscriptions

Better Nights offers an optional subscription (monthly or annual) that unlocks unlimited voice logging, carb/fat macro tracking, and the weekly AI insights report. Every subscription starts with a 2-week free trial — cancel anytime during that period in Settings > [your name] > Subscriptions and you won't be charged; otherwise it auto-renews at the listed price. All payment is handled directly by Apple through the App Store — we never receive or see your card details. The app only ever knows whether a subscription is currently active, nothing more.

Third parties

Other than the optional Anthropic API relay described above, Apple's handling of subscription payments, and your own private iCloud sync (governed by Apple's privacy policy), Better Nights does not share your data with any third party. We do not sell data, and there are no advertising or analytics SDKs in the app.

Children's privacy

Better Nights is not directed at or marketed to children and is not intended for use by anyone under 18.
